Self-employed person means a foreign national who has relevant experience and has the intention and ability to be self-employed in Canada and to make a significant contribution to specified economic activities in Canada.

Relevant experience

Relevant experience is defined as:

  1. participation at a world-class level in cultural activities or athletics
  2. farm management experience or
  3. self-employment in cultural activities or athletics.
 
   
Self Employed: Selection Criteria

You will then be assessed against five selection criteria and a point system. You must obtain a minimum of 35 points if you want to immigrate to Canada.

Requirement to undergo a medical examination:

You must pass a medical examination before coming to Canada. Your dependants must also pass a medical examination even if they are not coming to Canada with you.

Applications for permanent residence will not be accepted if an applicant’s health:

  • is a danger to public health or safety, or
  • would cause excessive demand on health or social services in Canada.
 
   
Requirement to have minimum necessary funds:

You will need to provide proof of your available funds in order to support yourself and your family for a minimum of six months in Canada.
The amount of money you need to support your family is determined by the size of your family. These amounts are updated every year.

Criminal and security checks:
If you have a criminal record, you may not be allowed to enter Canada. People who pose a risk to Canada’s security are not allowed to come to Canada either. If you want to immigrate to Canada, you and any family members over the age of 18 who come to Canada with you must provide police certificates to the visa office.
